It is a beautiful, cloudless day in the quaint town of ChestersMills and short order cook as well as ex-army captain Dale Barbra is just about to leave this town forever. When suddenly a plane blows up in midair as if it had struck an invisible barrier, after a closer inspection there appears to be an invisible wall preventing him from passing. All across this barrier, horrible events are transpiring: a farmer and his tractor drive straight into the barrier, two retired nurses coming into town come across a woman on their side who has somehow managed to crash her car into open space so they put the woman in the car and drive head first into the dome leaving two dead and one seriously injured. The heart pacemaker of the chief of police explodes due to a magnetic field caused by the barrier and due to a completely barrier unrelated confrontation a teenage girl is murdered. What follows is a mad grab for power executed by “big Jim” Rennie the town’s corrupt politician. Who decides for “the good of the people” to enrol young men and women all under the age of eighteen all of whom are also friends of big Jim’s son Junior Rennie a mentally unstable man who has a deep a hatred for Dale Barbara (Barbie).
It is up to the now trapped Iraqi veteran Dale Barbara and a few faithful cohorts to mount an insurgency against Jim Rennie , his son and all of the corrupt officials that Jim Rennie has been able to bribe, extort and threaten in order to obtain all the power and now that he has it he is never letting go.
This is a great book and a perfect insight into the human mind and the way that people choose to fight or flight as the town and it’s people tumble into an abyss that they may never be able to crawl out.
